Who Are Welsh Water (Dŵr Cymru)?

Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water is the not-for-profit water company responsible for supplying drinking water and managing wastewater for most of Wales and parts of western England that border Wales. Unlike the majority of UK water companies, Welsh Water operates without shareholders, meaning any financial surplus is reinvested directly into infrastructure, services, or customer bills rather than paid out as dividends.

Owned by Glas Cymru, a company limited by guarantee, Welsh Water serves around 1.4 million households and businesses and supplies nearly 830 million litres of drinking water every day. It is one of the largest companies headquartered in Wales and employs more than 3,500 people across the region.

Welsh Water is regulated by Ofwat (the Water Services Regulation Authority), the Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI), and Natural Resources Wales (NRW) for environmental performance. If your business is based in Wales, find out how Tariff.com can help you take control of your business water services.

What Services Does Welsh Water Provide?

Welsh Water delivers essential water and wastewater services to homes and businesses across Wales, including:

Clean drinking water supply: Treating and distributing approximately 830 million litres of water every day to the required health and safety standards.

Wastewater collection and treatment: Managing wastewater from homes and businesses before safely returning it to the environment.

Water quality monitoring: Continuous testing to ensure the water supplied to your premises remains safe and of high quality.

Infrastructure maintenance: Investing over £2 million every day in maintaining pipes, treatment works, pumping stations, and reservoirs across Wales.

Water efficiency support: Providing guidance to help businesses reduce their consumption and lower operating costs.

How Does the Water Market Work in Wales?

Wales has not deregulated its business water market for most customers, and this is the key thing Welsh businesses need to understand.

Unlike England (which opened to competition in 2017) and Scotland (deregulated since 2008), the Welsh Government chose to retain Welsh Water as the monopoly supplier for most business premises. If your business uses less than 50 million litres of water per year, you cannot switch water retailers. Only very high-volume industrial users above that threshold are eligible for the Open Water market.

For the vast majority of Welsh businesses, the route to savings is through bill auditing, tariff reviews, drainage rebates, and consumption reduction not changing supplier.
